Project

Cancer awareness and prevention in multicultural communities for World Cancer Day

The Challenge

The Cancer Institute NSW (CINSW) sought to increase awareness of cancer prevention, early detection, and available services for multicultural communities in NSW.  Cultural communities experience additional challenges following a cancer diagnosis including language barriers, cultural taboos, and stigma surrounding cancer screenings and diagnosis.

CINSW partnered with CulturalPulse to engage 5 multicultural partner organisations and support them to facilitate culturally tailored community events to enable vital health messages to reach diverse audiences in ways that resonated and would benefit them.

The Approach

CulturalPulse supported CINSW to execute community engagement events to elevate trusted cultural voices and in-language communication to drive awareness about cancer.

  • Coordinated 5 organisations including SGL Charitable Organisation Australia (Sikh community), South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD), Co. As..It. (Italian community) Pink Sari Inc. (South Asian), Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD)) to host culturally relevant events featuring cancer survivors, healthcare professionals, and trusted community leaders.
  • Supported events with in-language content, including flyers, posters, banners, and social media assets to ensure accessibility.
  • Promoted World Cancer Day messaging through CulturalPulse’s Media Network, leveraging community social groups, digital platforms, and cultural media.
  • Encouraged participation through word-of-mouth referrals, ensuring that messages were spread within trusted networks.
