
Queen Victoria Market to host first African Festival Melbourne in September
On September 22, Queen Street Plaza will come alive to the beat of the African drums. African Festival Melbourne is a free one-day event is a fun, family-friendly affair that showcases an amazing array of diverse arts, music, dancing, cultural performances and authentic African food.
Showcasing foods from Ghana, South Africa, Senegal, Ethiopia, and more, festival goers will really get to enjoy flavours from the continent of Africa. An adventure for your taste buds awaits with foods including: ghanaian style kebab, African Plantains, Mafe (peanut butter stew), Accara (vegetarian bean fritters), Jerk chicken, doubles, Koeksisters , Bunny chow and middle eastern hummus on the menus.
“Working with the food vendors and the performers we are so pleased with all the enthusiasm and excitement everyone has brought to the table,” says festival director Himanshi Munshaw Luhar.
African Festival Melbourne is going to be such a great experience. We have been working closely with community partners in putting together a day that the whole family can enjoy.
The stage will be full of amazing entertainment with groups like One Spirit Africa, Wassawumba, Melbourne Djembe, and afrobeats by Kwabo Events performing and running workshops for festival goers to get involved and learn some new moves.
There will also be plenty of opportunity to show for African giftware and jewellery.
The festival will be hosted by Dorcas Maphakela recipient of the 2017 Multicultural Awards for Excellence by the Victorian Multicultural Commission. Dorcas is the Founder/Producer and Presenter of OZ AFRICAN TV and works tirelessly within her various roles in uplifting the African community.
